Opening a Thai bank account as a foreigner

Each bank decides for itself whether to open an account, and checks have tightened since anti-mule-account measures began. We cannot guarantee an account, but we prepare the papers banks look for: a residence certificate, an employment letter and certified translations.

Documents banks commonly request

  • Original passport
  • A Non-Immigrant or other long-stay visa
  • Evidence of your purpose in Thailand, such as a work permit, a school acceptance letter or a marriage certificate with a Thai spouse
  • Proof of a Thai address, such as a residence certificate from your embassy or Immigration, or a lease

Guidance published by the BOI from Kasikornbank says accounts are not opened for tourist visa, Visa on Arrival or visa-exempt holders. Banks and branches may ask for more.

If you live outside Thailand

  • Non-residents, as defined by the Bank of Thailand, may be able to open a Non-Resident Baht Account (NRBA) at some banks.
  • These accounts carry special conditions, such as designated branches, a cap on total balances and supporting documents for each transaction.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open an account on a tourist visa?

Usually not. Many Thai banks open accounts only for long-stay customers who work, study, retire or have family in Thailand.

My existing account was frozen. What now?

Contact the bank to verify your identity and supply what it asks for. If the freeze follows a fraud report, the bank and police procedures apply; we can review documents and connect you with a lawyer.

Can someone come to the bank with me?

An accompanied visit can be booked in advance. You must still attend in person to be identified under the bank's rules.
